  • “Quite Chaotic”: RCB’s Mo Bobat Remembers Time Before IPL Suspension

RCB were scheduled to play Lucknow Super Giants on May 9, the day when IPL was suspended for a week due to India-Pakistan military conflict.

It was an evening marked by confusion, chaos, rumours and lack of clarity for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru players and staff when the IPL game in Dharamsala was called off, team’s Director of Cricket Mo Babat said on Friday, adding that they didn’t expect the conflict to resolve so soon. The RCB players were returning to their hotel by the team bus after a practice session when they saw images of Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals cricketers leaving the Dharamsala stadium in darkness on May 8.

RCB were scheduled to play Lucknow Super Giants on May 9, the day when IPL was suspended for a week due to India-Pakistan military conflict.

“Yes, quite chaotic. Tried to stay quite calm and tried to get as much information from the BCCI as possible and try to communicate with clarity,” Bobat, the former England men’s team performance director, told RCB Bold Diaries.

“It was a pretty eventful evening. We practiced the day before the Lucknow game. And, then, actually on the bus on the way back, a lot of the guys were watching the game on their phones, the Punjab vs Delhi Capitals game.

“And then we saw the floodlights had gone out and the players had come off the field. We were not too sure what was going on, and only when we got back to the hotel we kind of got a proper sense of what was happening,” he added.

Bobat said the team only came to know about the IPL suspension only the next day. His initial thought was that the tournament would be called off.

“So that evening a lot of rumours, a lot of chat and the next morning we found out that our game wasn’t taking place and the competition had been suspended for a period.

“Our initial impression was that the competition would be called off for a period of time. You don’t expect a conflict like that to resolve itself, as it did.” He said RCB was mindful of the fact that the players, both Indian and overseas, would want to return to the safety of their homes, given the deteriorating situation.

“We were quite keen to send the players home because actually (it was) a good chance for them to have a break. So for the Indian players, that’s relatively straightforward.

“With the overseas players, myself and (head coach) Andy (Flower) sat them down and spoke to them all and said, ‘Look, what is your preference?’ and a lot of them said ‘look we’d like to go home because it’s a period of uncertainty but were very committed, and if we need to come back we’ll come back.” Reassembling the overseas players, who had left, was a far bigger task than sending them back to their respective countries, and it came with security assurances, and lots of liaisoning with the respective cricket boards.

“We found out Monday evening that the tournament is back on. So, overnight we were trying to find out as much security detail as possible because we needed to communicate that to the players.

“We made a quick decision to communicate to the Indian players about when we wanted them back. We also needed to liaise with some of the overseas governing bodies, the ECB, Cricket Australia, Cricket South Africa and West Indies because you need to know what impact it’s going to have on them.

“I lined up video calls with all of the overseas players, took them through the security detail, schedule, about how RCB were going to look after them, which is really important for them to understand because we want them to feel safe and happy here,” he added.

  • “Was Angry, Sad”: Rajat Patidar Drops RCB Bomb Over ‘Broken Promise’ In 2022

RCB skipper Rajat Patidar was left “sad” and “angry” after being ignored by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 season despite assurances, only to be called up later as an injury replacement.

Rajat Patidar, who is leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru this IPL, revisited the 2022 season when he was left “sad” and “angry” after being ignored by the franchise despite assurances, only to be called up later as an injury replacement. Patidar also admitted that being handed over the captaincy by the inimitable Virat Kohli ahead of IPL 2025 did put him under pressure, but supportive words from the legend calmed him. Patidar has been one of RCB’s middle-order mainstays this season, scoring 239 runs in 11 games as the southern franchise aims for a maiden men’s IPL title.

“I had got a message (ahead of the mega auction for IPL 2022) that you should be ready… that we will pick you. I had a little hope that I would get another chance (to play for RCB). But I wasn’t picked in the mega auction. I was a little sad,” said Patidar on an RCB Podcast.

However, the 31-year-old Madhya Pradesh cricketer didn’t have to wait long to again wear the RCB colours as one of his state-mates got injured. But Patidar was not really keen on coming back to Bengaluru, knowing that he would hardly get an opportunity to play in a star-studded lineup.

“I (had) started playing in my local matches in Indore (after not getting picked in the auction). Then, I got a call that ‘we are picking you as a replacement for Luvnith Sisodia’, who was injured. To tell you frankly, I didn’t want to come as a replacement because I knew that I wouldn’t get a chance to play there, and I always feel that I don’t want to sit there (in the dugout).

“I wasn’t angry. It was like, if they didn’t pick me (during the auction), then I won’t get it (get to play). I was angry for a while but then I was normal,” said Patidar, who led Madhya Pradesh to the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final.

Being handed over the reins of a side that has the iconic Kohli in its ranks did put pressure on Patidar, but the star batter’s backing gave him confidence.

“I had a lot of questions like, there are so many (big players) in the team. Virat Kohli is such a big player, how will you do it under him. I know how supportive he is about this (captaincy change).

“I knew I have his full support. Like I said, this is a learning for me, it’s an opportunity for me. So, I will learn as much as I can from him. Because no one has the experience and ideas that he has in every role — be it batting, as an individual and as a captain,” said Patidar.

The day he was unveiled as the RCB skipper was one of the most memorable days for Patidar, and he says he went “completely blank” while receiving the plaque from Kohli.

“I have seen him (Kohli) since I started watching TV, in the IPL, off the field, in the Indian team… To take that thing (captaincy plaque) that he has been doing for so many years… and he is giving it to me with his own hands.

“When he was giving it to me, I was a bit worried about how to take it. I was completely blank about what to do. He told me to hold it. I held it. After that, I was looking at him like, what should I do? “Then he said a couple of words like, ‘you deserve it, you earned it’. So I felt a little bit okay. I mean when he said this to me then I became normal in that situation. I learn from him as much as possible. So I think that was a special moment… the way he introduced me to so many fans.”

  • BCCI Recalls Overseas Stars As IPL 2025 Nears Resumption: Report

Just days after the suspension of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 due to a military conflict between India and Pakistan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given the first indication over the league’s resumption. A number of overseas stars left the country after the tournament had to be paused over security concerns. As per a report, the BCCI and the franchises have started making calls to recall the players, even as the board awaits clearance from the Indian government over the date on which the T20 league can be resumed.

According to ESPNCricinfo, recalling overseas stars for the IPL remains the biggest concern for all 10 franchises. For some teams, a large chunk of players was stopped from leaving the country after an agreement of ceasefire was reached between India and Pakistan. The report also claims that IPL could start around May 15 if all goes as per the plan from here on.

For Gujarat Titans, one of the most in-form teams this season, only two overseas players had left the team — Jos Buttler and Gerald Coetzee – but efforts are being made to bring them back now.

A total of 12 League stage matches and four play-off stage matches are yet to be played in the tournament.

A top IPL source, who understands the movement of the broadcaster and production teams, hinted that there is a high possibility that not many venues will lose their share of matches but perhaps the picturesque Dharamsala will be removed from the roster on resumption.

“The broadcasters had initially asked its production unit to stay back in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai only when the military crisis was deepening. But after announcement of ceasefire, the crew has been instructed to stay put in all the original venues.

“So there is a chance that save Dharamsala game, which could be rescheduled elsewhere, venues like Kolkata might retain their matches,” the source said.

Thursday’s match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was abandoned midway due to the conflict.

With the Dharamsala airport shut, players and support staff of both teams travelled by bus to Jalandhar and then boarded a train to Delhi.

Out of 12 league matches, Ahmedabad is scheduled to host three games while Lucknow and Bengaluru have two matches each to host.

Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Jaipur have one match each to conduct.

It is still to be seen if Dharamsala’s match resumes from where it stopped or is played from the start again.

The play-offs will be held in Hyderabad and Kolkata. The iconic Eden gardens was scheduled to host the title clash.

  • IPL 2025 resumption: Complete list of player replacements & updated full squads as T20 league gear up post one-week halt

The IPL 2025 is all geared for a resumption post a one-week pause due to the India-Pakistan conflict. The revised schedule clashes with the international calendar. Here’s a look at the player replacements and updated full squads.

Bangladesh's Mustafizur Rahman and Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis (R) have been named as replacement players of Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans respectively for IPL 2025.

The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) has been eventful. After five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and last year’s runners-up Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were knocked out, the world’s richest league was jolted by the India-Pakistan conflict.

As a result, the IPL 2025 was paused for a week, forcing the BCCI to announce a revised schedule for the remaining 17 matches. According to the revised IPL 2025 schedule, the league stage will end on May 27, with the final to be played on June 3.

The revised IPL 2025 schedule also clashes with the international calendar, especially England’s tour of the West Indies beginning on May 29 and the World Test Championship final starting on June 11

The IPL 2025 was paused for a week on May 9 due to India-Pakistan border tensions. The Punjab Kings (PBKS) vs Delhi Capitals (DC) clash in Dharamshala on May 8 was called off midway due to air sirens and a blackout in the region.
